Our commitment: Every steel section property, formula, and engineering reference published on SectionLib is sourced from and cross-checked against the primary published standard before it goes live. We do not estimate, interpolate, or copy from secondary aggregators.

1. Who Produces the Content

SectionLib is created and maintained by Sathishkumar Narayanan, a Structural Designer with hands-on project experience across GCC and India. All section data, tool logic, blog articles, and course material is written or directly reviewed by him before publication.

Where content references specific engineering standards (EN, ASTM, IS, API), those references are verified against the source document. SectionLib does not publish content produced by automated generation without human expert review.

2. How Section Data is Sourced

Structural steel section properties published on this platform are derived from the following primary sources:

  • European sections: EN 10365:2017 (Hot-rolled steel channels, I and H sections โ€” dimensions and masses), EN 10056-1 (Angles), EN 10210-2 and EN 10219-2 (Hollow sections)
  • Indian sections: IS 808:2021 (Hot-rolled steel beam, column, channel and angle sections), IS 811:2015 (Cold-formed steel sections)
  • American/AISC sections: ASTM A6/A6M (Standard specification for general requirements for rolled structural steel bars, plates, shapes, and sheet piling), AISC Steel Construction Manual 16th Edition
  • Pipes: API 5L (Specification for line pipe), ASME B36.10M (Welded and seamless wrought steel pipe), ASME B36.19M (Stainless steel pipe)

Each section's dimensional and property data (area, Iy, Wel, Wpl, iy, etc.) is manually cross-referenced against the tabulated values in the relevant standard. Computed secondary properties are verified using the standard geometric formulae for the section shape.

3. Tool Calculation Methodology

All calculation tools on SectionLib implement standard engineering formulae as published in the relevant design codes and standards. The methodology used is documented within each tool page. Key principles:

  • Formulae are implemented exactly as stated in the referenced standard โ€” no approximations or simplifications are applied without explicit disclosure
  • Unit handling is explicit โ€” all inputs and outputs are labelled with units; the tool does not assume unit conversions silently
  • Results are presented as reference values only. Engineers are responsible for verifying all outputs against the current revision of the applicable standard before use in design
  • Tool logic is reviewed against hand-calculated examples before publication

4. Blog and Course Content

Engineering articles and course lectures published on SectionLib follow these standards:

  • All technical statements are supported by reference to a published standard, code, or textbook
  • Worked examples are checked for mathematical accuracy before publication
  • Where industry practice or engineering judgement is discussed, it is clearly distinguished from code-mandated requirements
  • Articles are written from direct project experience, not paraphrased from other websites

5. Standards Referenced on This Site

SectionLib references data from the following standards. A full list with publication details is available on the Data Sources page.

  • EN 10025, EN 10034, EN 10056, EN 10060, EN 10058, EN 10210, EN 10219, EN 10365

6. Corrections and Updates

If you identify an error in any data or calculation on SectionLib โ€” whether a dimensional value, a formula implementation, or a factual statement โ€” please report it using the contact form. We take accuracy seriously and investigate all reported issues promptly.

When a correction is made:

  • The affected page is updated immediately
  • For significant corrections, a note is added to the page indicating what was changed and when
  • The "Last updated" date on the page reflects the correction date

Standards are periodically revised (e.g. IS 808 was updated in 2021). SectionLib monitors standard revisions and updates affected data sets when a new edition is published and verified.

7. Independence and Objectivity

SectionLib has no commercial relationship with any steel manufacturer, supplier, or fabricator that influences data presentation. Section data is published for all manufacturers covered by the applicable standard โ€” not selectively for commercial partners. Tool results are mathematically determined โ€” not tuned to favour any supplier or product.

The site is supported by Google AdSense advertising. Advertising content is served by Google and is entirely separate from editorial content. Advertisers have no influence over the engineering data, tool results, or editorial decisions on this platform.

8. Contact

Questions about editorial standards, data accuracy, or correction requests can be submitted via the contact form.
